This is typical of the way Hartung worked with lithography in those years: repurposing tools (scrapers, brushes) to recapture on stone the tension of his large-scale paintings. This print is catalogued in Rainer Michael Mason's catalogue raisonné under no. RMM 431. It was printed at the Erker-Presse in St. Gallen—the Swiss workshop where Hartung conducted much of his most intensive research into scratching techniques—and published by Galerie de France in Paris. It is also illustrated on page 24 of the catalogue \u003ci\u003eHans Hartung, Grafik aus der Erker-Presse 1973\u003c\/i\u003e (St. Gallen, Edition Erker, 1974). It naturally belongs to Gestural Abstraction and the School of Paris, alongside Bram van Velde and Pierre Soulages. It also finds its place seamlessly in an interior designed around post-war design furniture.
